Someone Else Is Happy With Less Than What You Have

- Chris Voss, Author of "Never Split The Difference"

After reading that quote late at night last night, I went to sleep with something to chew on.

In these last few weeks, things have been very difficult over here. My resilience has been tested on a daily basis, and I am doing my best to stay afloat in more ways than one. It really fucking sucks, but that’s how it’s been. I have to put on a façade of stoicism, even though some days, I feel like I am crumbling.

The little I see that is going in my favor is miles ahead of what other people may be happy with though. And I need to see it that way.

I am not immune to negative thoughts. After writing this newsletter for as long as it’s gone, I’ve realized that it’s helped me at least put it out in the universe that I am trying, and to be optimistic. But I have to realize that my fortune (or lack there of) can change in the course of one day, for the better. It has happened before several times. And I am putting it out there that it will change for the better again.

If you’re a glutton for punishment like I am, then you understand that ultimately, the one who can unfuck you is you. I cannot sit idly by and allow the universe to fuck me. Every time my heart beats, and every breath I take, I must fight the fuckage. I must do what I must to reverse the trajectory that led me here. And I can’t stop until I kill it forever.

Want to get an instant dose of “holy shit, they are happy with way less than I have”? Look up on instagram accounts of people who have ALS, or are paralyzed from the neck down. Cancer patients also. Or the caregivers of those who are dealing with the above conditions. Accounts of Eric LeGrand, Rebecca Koltun, Laura Michelle, Steve Gleason, and Brooke Eby. They are among the strongest people that have ever lived. And we can stand to learn a lot from them. Give them all a follow.

To quote Chris Voss once again, “remember that gratitude and even happiness (most of the time) is a choice, a perspective.”
